WHAT IS A COMMUNITY BATTERY?

Community batteries are a more affordable and cost-effective solution for renewable energy storage than individual household batteries, which are still prohibitively expensive for most people.  With community batteries, we can make our energy system more resilient, climate friendly, equitable, and affordable.

A Community battery will have approximately 200-300 kWh to link 50-200 households via a shared battery. The idea is that it would be cheaper to maintain and run one large battery rather than multiple individual household batteries in a given area.

Community batteries are still in their infancy, with various trials being undertaken around the country. The Government has promised $200m to install 400 community batteries.
